Tired of the big city pollution and need some fresh air? Looking for the ideal place for an isolating weekend getaway in the bush? Look no further than Buffalo Kloof’s new camp, Spekboom Private Safari Camp!

Spekboom Camp consists of a central living area and eight individual treehouse bedrooms (en-suite). Sleeping a maximum of eight couples, it is best suited for friends and family.

Immersed in one of Eastern Cape’s beautiful thicket valleys, the camp is engulfed by the miracle-working spekboom plant after which it was aptly named. It is a complete breakaway from civilisation, however with many comforts you would experience at home. The central living area has an internal and external braai facility as well as a pizza oven. Watch your chops sizzle while telling stories from your camp chair around the 2m wide fire pit, which creates a relaxing African bush ambiance. There is a swimming pool to cool off in after a long game drive in the summer months, a highlight with the kids under supervision.

When creating the camp, the vision was to create a place that is comfortable and homely and to do so with minimal impact on the surrounding environment. The bush and the wildlife are our priority and Spekboom Camp was designed to invite you into their space in an enjoyable yet respectful manner. It is in special places like this that we are reminded that some luxuries are non-essential. Spekboom Camp is entirely self-sufficient and “off the grid” with energy supplied by solar power. The old camp style “donkeys” are used to heat up water sourced from rain water harvesting. When building Spekboom Camp, we wanted to reuse as much building material as possible to keep our footprint light and minimal. Old stones are used for paving, sneeze-wood fencepoles for privacy fencing and non-indigenous pine trees were cut down and used for internal structural beams.

Spekboom Camp is ideal for families wanting a self-catering weekend away. Alternatively, you can choose to have your own private chef. The camp is serviced daily, leaving you to relax and enjoy the Eastern Cape wilderness. The uniqueness about Buffalo Kloof and Spekboom Camp is that guests have full, exclusive and private use of the camp and experience the entire 20 000 ha reserve of wilderness to themselves. The safari is completely tailored to meet the needs of each group.

Sustainable tourism is vital in conserving Africa’s wildlife, communities and wilderness. After the COVID 19 pandemic, supporting local is vital! In doing so you are making a significant contribution to the longevity of Africa and its species. By visiting Buffalo Kloof, your contributions help us protect our endangered species, fund anti-poaching, create more space for wildlife, enable us to employ people from local communities and ultimately keeps our Buffalo Kloof dream alive.
